The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain extension is that all websites that use it need to comply with special restrictions. In other words, all dot MOBI websites have to be designed to be opened correctly by mobile devices in agreement with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” drawn by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in cooperation with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These incorporate how a website is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The requirements have induced some questions since the universal top-level domain name extension is the only one that specifies what devices should be able to access a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a web page should be designed in such a way as to be accessed by the majority of Internet browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
